Professor Stuart Daspher

Bsc(Hons) – La Trobe University, PhD - The University of Melbourne

Professor Stuart Daspher is Chair of Oral Microbiology at the Melbourne Dental School, University of Melbourne and a Project Leader within the Oral Health CRC. He has been researching the causes of the two common oral diseases Dental Caries and Periodontitis for over 20 years. He is one of Australia’s leading oral microbiologists and is helping to change the way we think of how bacteria exist in the oral cavity and their roles in health and disease. He has pioneered new technologies to investigate how these bacteria form polymicrobial biofilms (dental plaque) on the surfaces of the teeth and how these bacteria interact with each other to cause disease.

This research has lead to the publication of over 60 articles in international journals and the patenting of a number of new technologies for the treatment and prevention of disease. Stuart works closely with industry partners in the Oral Health CRC to translate the results of research into oral health care products.
